September in Sixth Class

29th Sep 2022

by Keegan Kelly

We had a very busy beginning of the year in sixth class, below is a short summary of some of the work that was completed in September in Room 9.

In maths we measured how tall each of us are and found the average height of all the people at our tables, the average weight of all the school bags at the different tables, found the average age of all the people at the different tables, and we also learned about place value and multiplication.

In art we made self portraits with one side being all the things we like to do and find fun. We also made pictures of celtic tombs with our name in Ogham (it's a celtic language made up of a series of lines)

In S.E.S.E we learned about Irish saints and scholars and about St. Patrick and how christantity came to Ireland, and how the vikings came to Ireland up through rivers and raiding monks for the beautiful metal work, book covers, chalices and religious items.

I ngaeilge, bhíomar ag foghlaim ‘Mé Féin’- aois, áit cónaithe, teaghlach, scoil, ag déanamh cur síos orainne.

In English we have been using a new book called Flying High. We have read some of the short stories in the book. The stories sometimes are based on real books or some stories are fact pieces, some are fiction, some are non fiction.

During PE we have been playing basketball, improving our dribbling skills, learning how to pass, how to throw the ball properly and how to shoot with the ball. We have played a good few games. We also did tryouts for the Athletics Fest with 2 boys teams, 2 girls teams and 2 mixed teams entering. It took place on the 29th of September. We trained for the event by doing relay races.

In music we have been learning tin whistle with Ms McTernan. We have been learning a polka called 'The Little Diamond'. We have all been practicing and now nearly everyone is able to play.

As a treat for making such a great start to sixth class, Mrs. McDonagh gave us croissants and hot chocolate on the last day of September. We really enjoyed them.
