Remembering Alan
Today was a very special and emotional day in St. John’s National School as we gathered with the wider community to remember our dear friend Alan Singh, as the first anniversary of his tragic passing approaches.
The day began with a beautiful memorial service in St. Brigid's Church led by Fr. Martin. Children from 3rd to 6th Class sang throughout the service, accompanied by Mrs. McDonnell. Alan’s teacher, Ms. O’Flaherty, spoke warmly as children brought symbols representing Alan’s life and personality to the altar beside his photograph. His sister Aisha and her best friend Elena presented flowers, while his classmates brought a Spiderman figure, a book filled with their favourite memories of Alan, and a yellow hula hoop — a reminder of something he loved to play with. His creativity and joyful spirit were fondly remembered throughout the ceremony.
Teachers and members of the community also came to the altar to share readings and offer words of support to Alan’s family and classmates. Fr. Martin spoke beautifully about heroes and the impact one person can have on the lives of others. Ms. Curley expressed sincere gratitude to all those who supported the school and community following Alan’s passing, including the Gardaí, emergency services, Coast Guard, members of the public who assisted on the day, the staff of St. John’s and St. Mary's College, the Ballisodare community, NEPS, liaison officers, and many others.
The service concluded with Alan’s classmates, now in Third Class, bringing night lights to the altar as the children sang This Little Light of Mine. It was a truly moving and heartfelt celebration of Alan’s life.
Following the ceremony, everyone returned to the school where Ms. Curley unveiled a special memorial bench dedicated to Alan. His grandfather and sister Aisha had the honour of cutting the ribbon. The bench, designed in blue and red to reflect Alan’s love of Spiderman, features a plaque and a beautiful Spiderman mosaic.
Alan’s father Iqbal, his family, and members of the school & wider community then gathered in the GP room for tea and refreshments. Sincere thanks to the Parents’ Association for organising this.
Alan & his family will forever be in the hearts of all at St. John's NS. 🩵
