Active Schools Week 2025
Active Schools Week - June 16th -20th 2025
Active Schools Week - our favourite week of the year!!
Wow, what a week! Such a fun week for our whole school community, one to remember! Thanks to our Active School Committee and all the 5th/6th Class pupils who have been a great help throughout the week too.
Monday: On Monday we began with our 'Wake Up Shake Up' Macarena, and 5th Class helped to set up circuits for every class. Active Homework sheets were distributed to each class, and 6th Class led the way with Active lines when the bell rang at breaktimes.
Tuesday: Tuesday saw our Boys' football team & supporters head off to a Shield Final. The supporters engaged in a lovely walk through Union Wood to get to the pitch - we are so lucky to have this facility on our doorstep. Although the boys were unfortunate to lose by just one score, spirits were lifted with a trip to Mammy Johnston's for ice-cream!
While the team were gone, the junior pupils kept Active Week going with completing some skipping and Hula Hoop Challenges and having some fun with the parachute. Penalties against your teacher were a fun feature of this afternoon too.
Wednesday: What a day!! Table Tennis was set up in the GP Room, and pupils got a chance to test our their skills against each other. Athletics was led by Dermot McDermott at Abbey Drive and each pupil got the opportunity to be coached by a professional! Exercises in agility, endurance and finally a speed test really got the excitement and fun going on this day. There was a huge medal for the fastest boy and girl in each class who achieved the fastest times in the speed test. Thanks to Dermot for giving us his time and expertise, we really appreciate it!
Thursday: Thursday saw our sponsored walk take place, with parents and friends invited to join the children as we walked around Abbey Drive. This was a hot day, so we followed this by asking the ice-cream van to visit the school and each child enjoyed a nice cone to help them cool down!
Teacher Vs Pupils basketball remains a firm favourite activity with our 6th Class pupils! Thanks to Mr Caldwell, Mrs McDonagh, Ms. O'Flaherty, Ms Kilgannon and Catherine for playing, and to Mrs McMoreland for refereeing! The final score was 10-10 and special shout out to Euan in 6th Class who showed the teachers a thing or two about basketball!!
Friday: The hottest day of the year also happened to be our Sports Day! Thanks to all the GAA coaches who helped to facilitate this day - it was a wonderful success as always!
And so concludes Active School Week 2025, a huge success and greatly helped by the dry, warm weather.
