5th Class Fieldtrip to the River Unshin by Ayda

11th May 2023

On Monday, the 8th of May,5th Class got to go on a fieldtrip to the River Unshin, Riverstown with our teachers Ms.O’Flaherty and Ms.Elliot for the Something Fishy Program. Markus and Jimmy did the activities with us.

Markus and Jimmy separated us into three groups, each group had a tray with little creatures in it was a sample from the river. We used tweezers and pipettes to identify the creatures and put them in a petri dish. My group found lots of mayfly, caddisfly, freshwater shrimp and just one small leech. Our group found the only leech. But Markus said that because there was so much mayfly and other creatures it still had good water quality and that the one small leech didn’t matter.

Then after that we walked over to the river and stood at the wall. Jimmy and Markus were in the river. Jimmy had a backpack that uses energy to put an electric current in the water and stuns the fish. Markus said that it doesn’t hurt the fish. They caught lots of small fish. He then put them in a tank and we all came around to look. They caught fry, smolt, parr minnow and stickleback.

After that we had lunch, then a bunch of hens came over and we were all giving them little pieces of food. Some people gave them names. After that we packed up our lunches and headed over to the reception in Folk Park. Then the bus came, we were all lined up and ready to go when we saw a goose attacking a hen, it was pinning it to the ground and pecking on the hen. When the hen finally escaped the goose started attacking a different hen! We were all staring out of the windows to see them. Soon we were on the way home.

Over all it was a really fun day and I loved it. My favourite part was when we were examining the little creatures.
